Reviews

  • Not His Best

I love everything Mark touches, but I'm afraid he's losing that Midas touch. There has been a slight decline over the last few albums. Blues Funeral was a masterpiece, but Phantom Radio and Gargoyle were of slightly lesser quality. My main problems here lie with the similarity of the songs on this album, and the production. Regarding the latter, perhaps it is just the way Mark's voice has changed with age, but his voice seems to meld into the mix completely on this album. His voice is more of an instrument than a focal point. At times it is hard to distinguish the words and his voice from the cacophony of electronica. Perhaps his vocal range lends itself more to the lo-fi of his earlier albums. I will continue to support Mark, but I hope for something a bit different on the next album.

Great addition to his catalog. He sounds as fresh as ever!

This one's lacking something. Even the songwriting seems a tad elementary on a couple of the songs. Phantom Radio and Blues Funeral were much better, as was Black Pudding. I still love and will continue to support Dark Mark.

I miss the organic Lanegan days. "Borracho" was an awesome tune.
  • Good album. But Lanegan is overdoing it with these beats

His voice doesn't require all the extra instruments added in this album (like, for example, 2013's "Blues Funeral". That is simply my opinion of the style I prefer. But Lanegan is such a legend that even when he isn't stripped down and just his voice and one acoustic guitar having his back is present, he can overload with unnecessary gobbledygook, electric guitars, and even the nauseating drum beat machine, and Lanegan still creates magic. That's why this is still a 5* album. I will request however that the next album PLEASE return to a more authentic sound. It's just Lanegan is one of only 2 or 3 artists today that doesn't have to require all this to make a great album.

Not that Lanegan's last album was bad - I enjoyed it - but this is a great effort. His voice is still smooth as a heavy liquid.
  • more varied than previous albums
