Continuing complexity

One of the hallmarks of Steve Hackett's music is its complexity. Even songs that appear, on first listen, as simple, contain complex structures and interlocking themes upon subsequent listenings. This release is a prime example of that, plus I find this particular recording more theatrical (and epic) than previous releases. One of the things I admire about Steve is his ability to keep taking chances with his music, to continuously be inspired by his travels and exposure to other cultures (including Americana, and the themes of US history). The signature guitar wail is present in most of the songs and, if you pay close attention, you can hear themes from past Genesis songs, Hackett songs and even Beatles songs peeking out of the background now and then. All in all a very satisfying recording for fans, of course, but if you are new to the Hackett oeuvre you may find it at once satisfying and demanding listen. Recommended! : )
