The movie “Moulin Rouge!” is a strange and beautiful classic filled with great performances and an amazing jukebox score. But then the musical came along, and it not only met the standards set by its source material; it exceeded them. This score boasts an impressive selection of songs from all over the pop world of music and a fantastic cast with which to perform it. Aaron Tveit is engrossing as Christian; Karen Olivo is gripping as Satine; Tam Mutu is so suave as the Duke; Sahr Ngaujah commands your attention as Lautrec; and Danny Burstein shines and glitters in the role of Harold Zidler. A warning: those who are going into this expecting an exact adaptation of the movie will be disappointed; but to those going in with an open mind, ready to escape for a little while and experience great music, “Welcome to the Moulin Rouge!”

I downloaded the Broadway cast album as soon as it became available... and was really disappointed. It felt like being at a party where the DJ had attention deficit disorder and kept skipping through songs before they could develop. But I thought maybe when I see the show all this relentless mania will make sense. It did not. The cast is incredibly talented across the board, but these pop song mashups make it almost impossible for the actors to develop their characters. Some songs provoked a laugh from the audience in a moment that was supposed to be serious. The show is a spectacle and many people love it, so I’m only offering my own reaction here. YMMV. I saw the movie just once, many years ago. Liked it. I give this album 2 stars because the performers are hugely talented. Other than that, blah.

Those that are comparing the Movie to the Musical need to get over it. They are two totally different things. I thought this production was INCREDIBLE. I've never seen the movie. I've been to several musicals made from movies. Changes are always made. The movie is pushing 20 years old, of course they were going to update some of the music. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it horrible, just like me loving it doesn't make it great.

I never thought it could get any better than the film, but I dare say it is. Aaron Tveit is delicious!
