I heqq of a deal...

First, I do not find the sound of these tracks to be inferior to the CD's in an A/B listening test. Sony did these remasterings in 2017, I believe. And the 5th, which I have in a much earlier CD, does not sound as good as the present version. So Apple Digital Mastering (formerly Mastered for iTunes), in my experience, has been an enhancement...certainly over mp3 versions. Now to the album itself: I can't believe that they are offering all this wonderful music in A-List performances for $9.99. I few years ago I picked up the Everest Krips set of the symphonies from iTunes for the same price and thought I was getting a steal, then. But this adds most of the important overtures plus the Missa Solemnis...so you can hardly go wrong. Reviews on these performances when the LPs first appeared in the '60's & '70's were generally favorable and superlatives were given for Symphonies 1,2,3,6,7 and the Missa. Musically I prefer the more mature DGG remakes with Vienna & Amsterdam, but they are all "live" performances while these are all studio performances. Technically microphone placement (and therefore stereo localization of instruments) is better in the studio than live; but the trade-off is that live usually offers more spontaneity than the studio. However, the fact remains that at $9.99 this really is a heqq of a deal !!

APPLE DIGITAL MASTER has ruined the sonics of this fantastic Beethovn symphony cycle. To hear it as intended, buy the CDs! 5 stars for the CDs!
