I own practically every recording ever released by the Mountain Goats and this ranks right up there with the best of them.

This sounds so good and so old school. Amazing return to that sound. Some other reviewer complained about the recording quality but this must be their first mountain goats record.

They began recording to cassette on old boom boxes. I felt they lost something when they upped their production. This is a nice return to old Mountain Goats. Older fans will be happy. New fans may not get it.

Interesting songwriting but this sounds like it was recorded as an iPhone 2 voice memo. Audio quality is noticeably awful, I’d advise this guy’s producer to spend more than $5 on a mic next time. 🤷♂️

When I came upon a band titled ‘The Mountain Goats’, I was ecstatic. FINALLY, I thought, I would be able to hear a band make use of the most underrated musical instrument: goat bleats. But alas, all I eventually found was an (admittedly pretty good) album about the fall of paganism at the hands of monotheism. I will still give it five stars though, for the implied Mountain Goats in the first song: Aulon Raid. (Obviously when Mr. Mountain Goats sings “come riding with your soldiers”, the soldiers are riding on goats)
