  • The Ballad of Paladin - the original vinyl release ?

This song, and the series that inspired it: Have Gun - Will Travel are both (literally) before my time. Even though I never saw the show, “Paladin - The Man in Black” was always mentioned with an iconic timbre by my father. Appropriate that I recently discovered it on the Heroes & Icons network. The series debuted on September 14, 1957. It was during that first season that Johnny Western/Johnny Westerlund played a supporting character in one episode and co-wrote this song along with Boone & Sam Rolfe, as a “thank you” to Boone. Of the three versions of this song that are available on iTunes, this one is probably what was released on vinyl back in 1958. Western’s rhythm guitar & other instruments are moved forward in the mix, and given (almost) equal weight as his vocal. This gives this version more of a “jangly” tone and can distract the listener from the lyrics. It may have been a good commercial move at the time, but not necessarily appropriate since he played rhythm guitar - intended as a supporting foundation, not leading in the soundstage. This version also adds trumpet notes at the open/close…again, probably a good commercial move for radio airplay in the 50’s.

Johnny Cash would be ashamed, placing a huge obnoxious beep over curse words. That's part of his character and his songs. You have ruined them

This album "Columbia Country Classics, Vol 3: Americana" has the radio edit with "son of a gun". Some like it that way, some like the other version which is on most other albums.

Just a little nitpicky thing but the title is North TO Alaska, not North OF Alaska.
  • It really is awesome

Recent American history in songs, some of these you just had to be there and lived it.
