  • If you HAVE to buy a "Best Of" album, this one's it.

I don't like "greatest hit" or "best of" collections, BUT if this gets somebody started listening to The Replacements then for God's sake, START HERE! If you appreciate how Kurt Cobain renewed a lot of people's faith in the power of a song, then meet Paul Westerberg; to me they are musical father and son. If you don't believe me, give 30 seconds of your time to "Unsatisfied". I'd say one of the many lasting legacies of both The Replacements and Nirvana was that they (at times) played songs full of dirt and grit, but with hooks and a pop ear that bring you in without ever getting stale. "Nevermind" would never have been so polished without an "Alex Chilton"; which, no matter how many times I have heard the chorus coming, still gives me that "goose bump" sensation that reminds me why I love music. In other words, if you're a Replacements' newbie, get this album, as long as you take an oath to get "Tim", "Let It Be", and "Pleased to Meet Me" eventually, Then I guess it's ok.
  • Chris Mars WAS The Replacements...

Chris Mars was the drummer. He also plays every instrument known to man. Check out his solo work, which he plays EVERY instrument on. I don't think it's on i-Tunes though... Bummer. If it weren't for Westerberg's attitude and ridiculousness, The Replacements would have been even bigger than they were.
  • GO VIKINGS!

Imagine, if you will, Bar Park MPLS 1981... My First weekend outing I see Prince... My second weekend outing I see The Replacements... My third weekend outing I see The BoDeans... The Jayhawks came later. Don't You Know... Is an excellent cross section of Paul & the boys growth & evolution / from 1981 to 1990. From Punk to Indie Rock & beyond. I dare you to try to sit motionless as you listen to this excellent 20 song historical romp-around! I couldn't sit still than & I sure as heck can't sit still now! Go Vikings! Long Live MPLS ROCK!

I was fortunate enough to get into the Mats when the first came out onto the scene!!! One of the best bands I have ever seen live to this day...If only time stood still....This showcases most of their better stuff and then some. I can play it and think back 'n the day, This is definetly worth it. If you just heard about the band or you have known about the for years this is a great mix of their music. I highly recommend it and then some!!! Have fun and don't forget TO CRANK IT UP LOUD, AS LOUD AS YOU CAN!!!! GO MATS!!!!
  • Can't Go Wrong With This One. One of the best 80s bands.

Of all the rock and roll bands to come out in the 80s alternative scene or not, the Replacements rank among the best and most underrated bands if not the 80s, then of all time. Such unbelievable craftmanship, songwriting, etc. A little rough around the edges, giving them an almost punk rock feel. While it's impossible to include every great song of theirs ( they're all great ), some of their best stuff is on here. Definitely worth a listen. At least check out the following tunes: "Within Your Reach" "Here Comes a Regular" "Kiss Me On The Bus" "Bastards of Young" "Alex Chilton" "Skyway" "Can't Hardly Wait" "Unsatisfied" "Left of the Dial" & "I'll Be You"
  • Nice Compilation

I would recommend the entire albums of "Let it Be" and "Tim" before this. Kind of miss "The Ledge" (one of my fav's) from "Pleased to Meet Me" here. Also, "Hootenany in E" could be included to illustrate their losser/goofier side when young. Overall its a decent representation of their work.
  • The Greatest....Period!

Sorry if it sounds pompous but EVERY band that came along past 1991 owes a ton of gratitude to the Mats. They set the standard for all the sounds you hear from artists today and their albums still sound as good and relevant today as they did then. Never be another Replacements!
  • Great Overview but...

Great compilation now that the Twin Tone stuff is included. Given that I got into the "Mats right when Pleased to Meet Me came out, I missed a lot of history but did get to see them twice before it became the "Paul" show. No one can take a cliche and turn it into the catchiest of songs like Paul Westerberg. Don't think that becasue the last two albums are shorted that they aren't great. It's just that by then, Paul had really found his groove and run with it and the other guys were along for the ride. If you want the raw energy that made up the group, grab "Sorry, Ma...", it's pure energy. And now for the "but". ...it's missing two of the best Replacements songs never to hit CD. The first, "If Only You Were Lonely" is a typical Westerberg yarn about being too drunk to talk to that one special girl. Priceless track. The other is the what could be the companion song for "Color Me Impressed", "Nowhere Is My Home". If the forthcoming box set is more than just a rumor, be sure to check out these jewels.
  • Great Hits set from Great American Band

A great compilation from the last great American rock & roll band (much better than the 2CD set!). Sure it's missing some defining selections from catalog standouts "Let It Be", "Tim" and "Pleased To Meet Me", but that's a great reason to go out and buy the original releases. This band still stands the test of time, making the three aforementioned albums classics and each a must for any rock fan's record collection. If you have not experienced The Mats, this set is a good place to start -- The two new cuts are icing on the cake. If you like rock & roll, you will like this CD -- and you will be back for the rest of the catalog.
