This is a pretty good album to start their career with. The year before this was released they had a killer EP, and one of the best songs ever was carried on with "Pass Out Of Existence". "Painting the White to Grey" is an amazing song! Everything about it rocks. If there is one song that you should buy out of the whole album, that would be it. "Dead Inside", "Let Go", "Jade", and "Severed" are also awesome songs. "Jade" is a really long one though, but it's worth it. If you leave those songs alone, then you get a good album. But buy "This Present Darkness" for a cheaper price. I like it a lot more, and it's a lot heavier and more brutal than this one.

This album is great. I am hooked on songs like Rizzo, Sp lit, painting the white to gray, and Let Go. Very good album if you are in to any type of metal you need some Chimaira. His voice is very unique and can go from a high pitch scream to a very low one. I highly suggest this and the album Resurrection, as well as Chimaira and The Impossibility of Reason.
  • My favorite of all their albums...Songs are shorter, but brutal and sound more old school.. buy now!

Their debut album does not disappoint... the production value is a little lower than future work, but does not take away any brutality from this album. Granted the songs are shorter, they are just long enough to keep you wanting more and don't get so long that you want to push the next track button. Sometimes I hear sounds similar to some older KORN albums, but their sound is still unique nonetheless and the singer sounds like he is tearing up his vocal cords when singing... Point is, just buy this album and check out their newer stuff later after you get used to their sound.

I'd been neglecting to get this album for a while, until I heard the whole thing through.Needless to say it isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.It has a nice mix a nice mix of bay area thrash and modern metal. For a debut this is a really good album.
  • sounds great but..

shouldn't this stuff be available in explicit form? not everyone likes hearing lyrics snuffed out...it takes away

This is my favorite chimaira album. Its not as sophistocated as their later albums, but it has a good hardcore feel to it. Their later albums lose the hardcore feel, although they are great too. (Their later albums are heavier, but not at all hardcore). My favorite songs are Severed and Forced Life. Their all good though. If your just downloading one song, download Jade; its a good song, and you get your moneys worth :) Listening to it at first gave me hope that there was to be a modern hardcore thing happening. But then they adapted a metal sound. Still love them though

Chimaira will never duplicate their original work seen in their original EP and PASS OUT OF EXISTANCE. They have become so overly absorbed in the metal scene that they have forgotten their roots. Resurrection is the wilted flower at the top of their dying career. Lyrics in this latest album speak of rebirth, separation from the ordinary. I see the oppisite.
  • For all you angsty heatseekers out there!

Take an accomplished metal band. Throw in an intense frontman with various stylings. Throw in some nu based content. You get Chimaira's album: Pass Out of Existence. One word describes this album: Stunning
