This music really shines both as a score and as concert music. Mr. Glass's work here lends itself well to the string quartet setting. The revealing texture
of this medium allows the listener to focus on the compositional elements of the music, without distraction of extraneous flourish and color. The stark timbre
of the string quartet is also a perfect complement to the film, and as usual, the performance of the Kronos Quartet is brilliant.

A great film transformed by the power of Kronos and Glass together. This is one of my favorites from both, very accessible yet intense. Buy the whole album, but "Carriage without a Driver," "In the Theatre," and "When the Dream Comes" are simply amazing.
I only wish - wish very deeply - that iTunes could somehow make the film with this soundtrack available. Separate the pieces are great, but having Lugosi's dialogue filter through makes this incredible.

Absolutely love this album. Phillip Glass is amazing and combined with the music of Kronos Quartet, they form a truely enjoyable album :D

Dracula is about anxiety, an unspeakable fear of the outside world, and suspicion of outsiders. The novel isn't subtle, but this music is. The story's themes couple so completely with the music, that the music itself triggers the horrible images of the movie.
Done in quartet, the music swirls, rises, and falls with the two violins giving most of the melody to the cello. The result is the timbre of the violin creates a mist of anxiety while the cello's sombre boom throws the desparing theme at the listener. The cello is relentless and unremitting, like Dracula himself, and an air of inevitability pulls the music deepr and deeper into the listener's soul as the story moves from Transylvannia to London.
But the resolution is at once hopeful and doubtfull, as in the story. The dissonance slowly gives way, like clouds breaking, to a dolefull sweetness. Dracula leaves the story, and the music, resentful, barely defeated, and entirely evil. The music is a masterpiece in both capturing the story's anxiety and artistry.

There are many ranges of music within this album. It goes from scary to mysterious all within a few songs. They don't make scores like this much any more. I could see Howard Shore doing this score just as well. This is my favorite Philip Glass album. Hands Down!

I saw the movie in 2002 while I was in class. Instantly the music captivated me -- it was so fitting and added forbodding, ominous atmosphere to the movie. Some of the pieces such as London Fog and Women in White are my favorites, but all of these I can enjoy. This score introduced me to the Kronos Quartet and to Philip Glass, which now are among my favorite musicians. Certainly, this score can stand alone as a musical journey in its own right.

I'm a long time fan of the old school horror films, and when I first heard the score accompanying the film on the enhanced DVD, it all clicked into place like a coffin lid. This might be Phillip Glass' most listenable work ( I dig most of his music, but not everyone does), and it's perfectly creepy- subtle and at the same time foreboding. I love it!
