I first heard Mariza, life in concert in Phialdephia. I had never heard Fado, nor do I speak Portugeuse. I was moved to tears by the music and clearly caught up in the emotional "swell" of whatever she was singing about. It was beautiful. She lead me to explore other singers such as Buika, who I saw this year and Sara Tavares. This album is a stunning introduction to the beauty of this music and I can highly reccomend it to my English only speaking acquaintances.

As a Brazilian and admirer of this wonderful style, which is a bit of longing, a bit of cry, mourn, much of the sea (Portuguese sea, as mentioned by Fernando Pessoa) and also "saudade", I was overwhelmed when I first saw Mariza on stage. She's undoubtedly the direct heir of the great Amália Rodrigues and the living proof that fado will still be vivid and vibrant for generations to come.

Never heard of fado, before seeing Mariza live in Burlington, Vermont. I read another reviewer's comment that her singing made him cry... that about sums it up. I don't understand Portugese language, except for the few words that are explained before, and during, the concert. I felt the music and Mariza's voice so deeply. Perhaps not a perfectly appropriate analogy, but my feeling after the concert was that I had just heard the Portugese Piaf....

I actually bought this cd in Lisbon in 2006, I am very lucky to have a Portuguese born mother! This album represents the essance of Portuguse people, remembering the past, and looking forward to the future. Portugal is so beautiful it makes me cry! Fado music will touch you whether you understand the language or don't, I am very lucky to be fluent in Portuguese! In my opinion the most beautiful of all the romance languages, and I speak French! My dad is from Quebec!!!

Excellent rendition of her 3 albums and the fusion with a full orchestra is at once powerful yet subtle. Worthwhile add.

This album couldn't be any better. For 'fado's lovers, I mean. Mariza has an amazing voice, and the songs she sings in this album are beautiful, such as "Chuva", "Cavaleiro Monge" and "Barco Negro". I bought the DVD, but the album must be as great as it.
