Folk Songs for the Converted

I've been a fan of Neal's music for a long time. This project is much different than your average Neal Morse record - it's firmly in the vein of Dylan-esque folk. Neal has an amazing gift for writing both music and lyrics, and his lyrical ability is shown prominently here. Most of his solo career deals with Christian themes, and this fact remains true on this project. The direction, however, is a bit different. Whereas his progressive music has (from a lyrical standpoint) more appeal to a non-Christian, these songs speak more directly to believers. His albums are never preachy - he is honest and heartfelt, not dogmatic or pedantic - but this album is geared much more towards believers. If you are a believer, this album will be a blessing. This album is encouraging, uplifting, and at times very amusing. If you are not a believer, you may enjoy this album as a good representation of where Neal is. He is passionate about his faith, and it really shows on these recordings. Musically, it is quite simple; the album is focused on the lyrics rather than the instrumentation. As it is, the guitar beautifully compliments the lyrical themes that Neal presents. All in all, I really enjoy this album.
