Reviews

  • Bland pop music disguised as jazz

This cast album feels very much like Frank Wildhorn composed, whom I am not a fan of. It is very accessible, but once you really get into it, there is nothing below the surface. Where is the emotion? Where is the insane and ferocious spirit that the novel possesses? Also, this music has absolutely no overarching style, just feels like a lot of songs put together. Get the LaChiusa version, it is much much better.

The entire recording is exciting and intricate. The harmony in Make Me Happy is twenty of the best seconds of music I have probably ever listened to. Brian d'Arcy James is phenomenal, Julia Murney is fantastic, and Idina Menzel calls on her role of Maureen from Rent to create a hilarious yet visibly injured charater (with an amazing voice of course). This is a must buy for anyone who calls himself a musical theatre fan.
  • Fantastic music and vocals all-around

Very exciting and fun music throughout the entire soundtrack. All four of the leads bring exceptionally strong vocals to the table and make this a very listenable soundtrack. Several songs, such as "What is it About Her" and "Life of the Party" work great as audition pieces that can show off vocal range and strength. Must-have selections (though the whole album is worth it: A Wild, Wild Party, The Juggernaut, Life of the Party, What is it About Her Poor Child Make Me Happy (AMAZING 3-Part Harmony!!)

I have listened to both Wild Parties, and this one is by far better in my eyes. I absolutely love Julia Murney's voice for Queenie, and Brian D'Arcy James is amazing. Idina and Taye are also show stopping, of course. Personally, I believe that Lippa's score captures the essence of a "raging 20's back-alley party" so much better out of the two. I also love the fact that the story is more focused on the central love triangle in Lippa's version. "Let Me Drown", "The Juggernaut", "A Wild, Wild Party", "The Life of the Party" and "Make Me Happy" are the absolute must-buys if you don't want to purchase the whole album. Give all the songs a listen to, in any case. The Wild Party is wonderful example of exceptional musical theatre. ;)

The first song from this album I ever heard was The Life of the Party (in my opinin the best song on here). That was pretty much all it took for me to get this. While some of the lyrics are a bit dodgy, the tunes are very showtuney and jazzy, but I don't think they come off as cheesy, just classic broadway, stage music, you catch my drift. While I've never seen the show and don't even know the synopsis, the music really shows the mood and theme of the show. Songs I would recommend are: "The Life of the Party", "Look at Me Now", "A Wild, Wild Party", "The Juggernaut", "Raise the Roof" and "I'll be There".
  • A Decent Score

Seeing as I'm not the biggest fan of Andrew Lippa already, this soundtrack doesn't impress me much. I will admit, it is well orchestrated, but the music for me just doesn't come across as a good listen - at least for a musical soundtrack. I have to point out Brian d'Arcy James, seeing as he is one of the great performers on Broadway today, and does an outstanding job on this soundtrack. Other than that, this album really does nothing for me. The show itself is entertaining, but the music, not so much. Not worth $10.00, but worth a purchase or two of single songs - anything that highlights Brian's voice would be my pick.

Wow when I first got this I was blow of off my feet. This cast includes Idina Menzel, as Katea prostitute who is in love with Burrs, who belts out all her numbers just amazingly (well its Idina of course so what do you think). It also features Taye Diggs as Kate's boyfriend and later lover of Queenie, Black (who sounds just plain awesome and wow....). Julia Murney plays Queenie, the tragic planner of the party and dancer, and Brian D'Arcy James as Burr her abusive clown lover. There's so much more but I wont list them. If you buy anything off of this album I would recomend Poor Child. It has all four leads singing a harmoy its so beautiful I near cried. Over all I recomened buying this version it has a beautiful score, wonderful singers, maybe not the best lyrics in the world but pretty decesnt, and just over all a sense of Broadway and the 1920's era.

Lippa understands the grittiness of the human and soul and gets down and dirty. The score is great and so are the vocals particulary Brian D'Arcy James who steals the recording as Burrs the clown. Must haves are: Let Me Drown, The Juggernaut, Maybe I Like It This Way, Come With Me, and What is It About Her. MUST BUY!
