Being a music LOVER, I listen to all types of music. Metal, alternative, and even this stuff! I think it's very well; think about the little amount of equipment they had to record such songs at the time. More people should be appreciative of the fact that America has made such wonderful music and that the LIbrary of Congress has so graciously put together this anthology for the buying public so that we may know how far we've come.

This is an interesting representation of the field recordings -- I appreciate that they selected collections that are perhaps less well-known than Jelly Roll Morton's or Muddy Waters'.
  • Songs to Delight the Neighbors

These songs are like a walk in the wilderness on a beautiful day. After listening to these people singing into a hand held microphone, I wonder if the promoters and marketers of music are developers who see opportunity instead of beauty on a nature hike. When asked where she learned the song, one woman answers, "I made it up." I gave this collection to a very good song writing friend, and she said that she couldn't get it out of her CD player long enough to play anything else.

This is truly the best of classic american folk music. The music is so vivid that you can smell the coal burning, the music puts you in the very core of turn of the century america, its a spiritual journey through the hills of virginia, to fields of the deep south into the heartland of america. This is a musical treasure found.
