highly overproduced and scrubbed clean of everything that made Apologies to Queen mary a good album, yet again I mostly liked their self-produced tracks the best. I like the dirty home-made sound, confusingly harmonic melodies and cleverly spur-of-the-moment brain-vomit-esque song structure. Time does not treat this band well.
  • Worth a second look....

This is generally acknowledged as a good album, but some are a tad disappointed by it, even the band intself. Well, Spencer anyway. It might actually be my fave of their three full-lengths. It's not as immediately pleasing as Apologies, but I think the songs on Zoomer are deeper and might have more staying power. In other words, they're growers. And in the never-ending Dan vs. Spencer fan debate, I think this is one album where Boeckner comes out on top. And I'm usually more partial to Spence!

... and satisfying overall. Soldier's Grin, Bang Your Drum and Fine Young Cannibals are great moments. This tends to avoid the overwrought prog/wank of Dragonslayer, so expect to be able to listen to the entire album without pain. How (or why) do these guys manage to sound so alike vocally and write so differently?
  • Not for the newly initiated.

This isn't a bad album. There are some pretty catchy hooks hidden here. It's the wait between them that really makes this a bit hard to listen to. I found myself bored quite a bit, and this is a guy who loves Snake's Got A Leg. The first song is incredible. If you only but one song off this album, make it Soldier's Grin. It's more like Apologies without sounding like the same old shtick. California Dreamer's your second best bet, followed by The Grey Estates. And don't expect to hear sunset Rubdown or Handsome Furs here-while there is definitely a noticeable distinction between Dan and Spencer's style, it ends up becoming something new. If you're new to Wolf Parade, I would strongly suggest Apologies to the Queen Mary first. But if you're patient and willing to wait for this album to grow on you, I'd reccomend it.

I just keep coming back to Mount Zoomer again and again. Wolf Parade's sophomore effort is the kind of album that you get addicted to but never tired of. It's balanced just right, starting off with the light and catchy Soldier's Grin, by the middle you've got the show-stopping California Dreamer, and to cap things off you have the best album-ender of the year in the epic Kissing the Beehive. It may not reach the heights of Wolf Parade's first disc, Apologies to Queen Mary, but that would've of been almost impossible anyway. Instead, Wolf Parade has created another album that I can't stop listening too, and I couldn't be happier.
  • An amazing feat from an amazing band.

This album is not only one of the best (and most underrated) of 2008, it is one of the best of this decade. I know that is a large statement to make, but once you hear this album you will understand what I mean. A mixture of the sonic force found in their first album, amazing lyrics, grand scope and more developed and fleshed out songs bring Wolf Parade to an important new point in their art. Their songs will evaporate, only to rain back down onto your conciousness. Mixing classic rock with jazzy mix-ups and some of the most daring compositions I've heard in a long time, Wolf Parade are Wolf Parade and there is no other band like them. It is an amazing album. Do not miss it.
  • Absolutely brilliant and completely underappreciated

This is probably the most underrated album of 08. While Apologies is amazing, at this point it is nostalgic; it is time for wolf parade fans (or i guess just fans of good music in general) to realize the beauty and mastery of this sophmore effort. It retains everything that made Wolf Parade great on their debut album- great vocs, awesome guitar rifts, simple yet layered sounds- while adding some newer sounds, a few slower tracks and a more cohesive theme with ongoing motifs and imagery. It is a masterwork and truly flaunts the achievements and progression of the band.
  • Yeah it's only nine songs...

... but they are some of the best songs you will hear this year. Amazing compositions take you through what feels like different genres of rock, but all equally amazing and catchy even. There may only be nine songs on this album, but the richness and quality of each song makes it feel like I should have paid more for this album. Get it now!
