I saw Ezra and the band yesterday in Evanston, and they blew me away! Although Ezra looked a bit crazy sometimes while singing, he put on a great show, as did the other embers of the band [Job, Andrew, and Adam]. Wonderful, creative lyrics, and truly honest songs. Ezra Furman and the Harpoons are a band as real as they can get. I wish them well at Lollapalooza this weekend, and in the future in general. Not that they need it (:

This album has excellent songwriting, arrangements, execution, and production. It is a solid LP throughout. I had never heard of EF or the band before; I checked out the album on the strength of one song played on the radio, "Take Off Your Sunglasses." The vocals sounds so much like Gordon Gano (dare I say better?) that the band to me sounds like an updated Violent Femmes for the 2010s, with several tracks sounding like the Femmes after a strong coffee. That's not to say it's frenzied or over-juiced. The production and execution are at once tight, clean, and controlled yet very loose and fun, with reliable high-energy drive and great lulls in all the right spots. Dark and light balance well in this album. The lyrics to "Dishwasher," in their pure simplicity, struck me as sheer poetry. Lots of textures. Great new rock.

I have heard "Take Off Your Sunglasses" on the radio and I'm a happy to say the rest of the songs are just as memorable. Ezra and Co. have fun with words while telling interesting tales that keep me intrigued. More importantly, the band ROCKS with an enthusiasm that stretches often into gleeful madness. A great release.

Whereas the debut album was more "Ezra Furman featuring the Harpoons," this album is truly more "Ezra Furman and the Harpoons." You still have the brutally honest and delightfully manic songwriting of Ezra, but this time his songs seem to have been developed more fully within the context of a band, resulting in a fantastically ferocious and overall more cohesive rock album. Every song remains unique while contributing to the big picture. "Big Deal," "The Stakes Are High," and "We Should Fight" are my current favorites. Purchase and enjoy, ya filthy animals!
