The music is lush and beautifully recorded, completely transcending the "Spanish" genre. The Cant de Les Estrelles ("Song of the Stars") is a never get tired of listening experience, presented here in a "world premiere recording," as are six others. Cant de Les Estrelles is performed for the first time since 1911. The original manuscript was severely water damaged in a publisher's warehouse fire in 1964 where it had languished through decades of family intrigues and legal disputes, finally resurrected by the pianist, Douglas Riva, featured on this recording. (See the Wall Street Journal article, "How to Find a Missing Masterpiece" of July 20, 2009 or the Naxos web site for more intriguing information.) There is not a flawed performance here. The two purely instrumental pieces (Granados' Romanza and Escena religiosa) are meditative, almost etherial, celebrations of the violin played primarily in its lower registers. Casals' works, based on the Roman Catholic Rosary and verses from the Song of Songs, present in their texts and music the feminine side of Christianity and Judaism. Voices of Ascension Chorus is simply gorgeous in their singing.
