this record is amazing. perhaps the only band who can create a song that is a completely new awesome song with different lyrics when played backwards! the whole record is awesome "sometimes life isn't easy"

One of the most beautifully complex albums I've heard in a while. I love it more each time I listen to it.

Every song is definable and they aren't all mushed together like mashed potatoes. It's a crisp and controlled album, but slightly crazy. In such a good way. Sometimes Life Isn't Easy is probably my favorite track. It really supprised me. Many of the songs contain Jonas Bjerre's super high and easily recognizable voice flowing perfectly and complimenting the instuments. But in Sometimes Life Isn't Easy, he uses his voice in a completely new way, that futher complicaites the song and makes it more interesting. During many of these tracks the entire sound of the song changes- it's so great and refreshingly unanticipaited. Like, in Cartoons and Macrame Wounds, it starts off sweet and wistful, then moves on to a deeper minor sound with condeming lyrics. Somehow, everything ends up flowing SO well, which is quite a feat! The only thing I could complain about is that sometimes I have no idea what he's saying. Thankfully, if you buy the whole album, you also get the digital booklet that has lyrics! 17 DELICIOUS songs for 8 bucks? Doesn't get much better! :)

...and, to even mention The Stone Roses in the same breath/sentence/thought/what-have-you as "Mew," borders on blasphemous.

this is one of the three best albums i own, the other two being mew's and the glass handed kites and mutemath's self-titled album. there is not a single song on this album i do not like. repeaterbeater is my favorite, but i also enjoy cartoons and macrame wounds and introducing palace players. this is definitely a must have album for any mew fan.

The first time I heard this album, I didn't like it very much. With all the harmonies, and combined melodies, it just seemed like too much was going on and it actually gave me somewhat of a headache. The second time I listened, slowly all my criticisms faded away and I realized I was listening to a pretty good album. Now every time I listen, it's just getting better and better. The reason I give four stars instead of five is because I do wish the band would simplify a little bit. The lead singer has an incredible voice but harmonizes a bit too much. There are several moments in the album when he sings at a lower octave and carries a beautiful tone to his voice. It would be nice to hear him cut out the harmonies every once in awhile and simplify the soundtrack. I find when I stop analyzing the sound I thoroughly enjoy the album. "sometimes life isn't easy" is probably my favorite. "Silas the Magic Car" is also a good one. I highly recommend giving the album several listens before judging. The sound is much different than previous albums, but it definitely grows on you.
  • ...I just keep coming back to this record

I guess I shouldn't apologize, but sometimes feel the need to, in saying how much I enjoy this record. I like some of the things others have said (more experimental Phoenix, good musicianship, etc.). It seems like the record I thought that the Flaming Lips could make (again) but didn't with Embryonic (not to take away from that record, more to explain a record I WANTED). Seeing them live only confirmed the things I liked on the record. Really epic in the most fun, un-selfconscious way...go MEW!
