Saying that DEVO is not a riff band or a catchy tune-smith band, in the regular sense, is going to get me in trouble with DEVO-tees. Some of their tunes like FREEDOM OF/FROM CHOICE is a key song where the message gets through, but not to everyone. Same deal with the subsequent hit BEAUTIFUL WORLD. Dance tracks they indeed are, but messages in a dance guise is what they seem to be.The tracks are not just dance tracks, in fact FREEDOM OF CHOICE is probably just as relevant today. Oh, am I ever sick and tired of finding DEVO under classic oldies. Perennial songs with a beat.

Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale, took notice of the Knack's current success with their New wave Beatle styled single "My Sharona and look what the cat choked up. This songs sends an aroma of ecstasy when sung in a car with people who have heard this gem for the first time. The giggle when they connect the dots. Then they start singing it out side the car and just about everywhere your hearing Girl You Want. Jeez the next thing you know you see girls sitting somewhere on top of the greenest trees. One of Devos Best Song if not the very best Ill mud wrestle you to prove it.

Everyone knows Whip It but this collection is so much more Freedom Of Choice show the band in peak pop sensibility and contains the strongest overall track selection next to their debut Nonetheless, a five star effort
  • Classic Devo Album..a must have

While "Whip it", "Girl U want" and prehaps title track are the best known songs from the album, those just scratch the surface of the other tracks. There is not a weak one here from start to finish. Don't be fooled by the SynthPop/New Wave feel of the songs as the lyrics have a stinging cynical social satire that will make you wonder if they were right all those years ago about how things were going to be. Don't hesitate, get this one and Q:Are we not men?..the two most important Devo albums. Get the rest if you are hooked.

A few years back I wrote an iTunes review on the previous release of "Freedom of Choice". I'll give a quick, executive summary here: Amazing album, poor remastering for CD. Well, 29 years after its release, Bugs Bunny has finally decided to give this the spit-shine it deserves. The highs are high, the bass, clean and defined, and the whole thing feels like what it was supposed to. How on Planet Earth did we get by with the garbage remastering job from the original CD release for so long, anyway? There's no looking back now, though. Heck, they even cleaned up the album art while they were at it! You can see the flags! I take a wee bit of issue with just slapping the DEV-O Live EP on as bonus tracks, as the expanded DEV-O Live is still in print, but I suppose they had to stick something on there. Still, what this poor spud wouldn't give for a remastered version of "Turn Around".
