EP is a great first effort from this folk/shoegaze band from eastern WA. The album's composition is as varied as the people who made it: in addition to the usual rock implements, there seem to be some interesting instruments involved, including violins and mandolins (I think.) Another neat thing I found was the high production quality; something that can understandably be hit-or-miss in the indie department. Not so here, as the aforementioned violins surge to the foreground and then fade into the ether, providing a turbulent soundscape in which the rest of the band can play. Also heard are two talented vocalists, and a rhythym section that is tastefully restrained in its performance.
This is a rather versatile album. Sounds good in headphones? Check. How about with the volume at appropriate levels? Definitely. Now how about with the volume at mom-approved levels? Interestingly, quite chill and in no way less lustrous. EP shines everywhere.
Everyone ought to give this band a listen, if only to encourage another release in the near future! I get the feeling we may hear more -- and possibly in a more experimental way -- from Buffalo Death Beam, and am looking foward to it.
