Light in the Sky is a great album. I was lucky enough to see them sing most of the album live at the Troy Music Theatre May 11, 2012. Their wide range of bluegrass, jazz, and folk was wonderful, and their harmonies spectacular. Each of Laurie, Molly and Abbie have a unique voice, but together they blend perfectly. And I am no country music fan, but they won me over, even if I liked the Irish sounding Oh My Michael the best....

Red Molly is not only a trio of the kindest girls you'll ever meet, but amazing musicians. The best thing about Red Molly is that their live shows deliver just as well as the their albums do. Get the record, see them live, you won't be disappointed!

I was blessed to hear these ladies sing at the bluegrass festival in Westcliffe Colorado in July 2011. I've been waiting on pins and needles for this cd with these three ladies singing... I was not disappointed! Very worth the wait and the money!

As always, Red Molly is just perfect. A wonderful mix of bluegrass, old style country and jazz. So glad we discovered this beautiful group 2 years ago at the Kerrville Folk Festival. This album definitely doesn't disappoint. Buy it and enjoy!

Whew! I feel like I'm in the twilight zone after that first review. Allow me to set the record straight. The supremely talented Molly Venter replaced Carolann, not Laurie. While Laurie certainly has a beautiful mid range voice, it's Molly that often growls and swoons on the bottom while Abbie floats effortlessly on top. 3 completely distinct and very different voices that when blended together produce spot on, perfect harmonies. Now we can move on. Bravo and congratulations to Red Molly for putting out an infectious and eclectic collection of originals and covers that is impossible to put down. These 3 women deliver a master class in the fine art of blending vocal harmonies. Every song is a gem to be savored and the pacing of this album treats the listener to a huge range of musical styles. Bluegrass, western swing, gospel, country, folk and jazz are all represented. The additional instruments never detract from these beautiful and often poignant arrangements. They are a welcome companion, especially the fiddle and organ. Both Molly and Abbie flex their songwriting chops and produce songs that feel like they have been part of our musical landscape for years. Do yourself a favor and download or purchase the "Light In The Sky" CD and by all means get out and see these women live. They are 3 musicians who clearly have the highest level of respect and love for their art. You will NOT be disappointed. Here's wishing that you guys "kill".

Light in the Sky is a first rate album from Red Molly, and it exemplifies what makes the band so great: beautiful lead vocals, tight harmonies, first rate instrumentation, creative covers, and impressive original songwriting. Along with Abbie Gardner and Laurie MacAllister , this is the first album that features Molly Venter, who replaced original band member Carolann Solebello in 2010. All three women take turns with lead vocals on various tracks, and all excel. A few highlights for me: Molly’s singing on the Doc and Rosa Lee Watson classic “Your Long Journey,” one of the most beautiful love songs ever written; Abbie’s original tune “Oh My Michael,” which sounds like a haunting Newfoundland sea ballad; and great covers of Dolly Parton (“Do I Ever Cross Your Mind”) and Gillian Welch (“By the Mark”). Buy this album! And also try to see them in person. They are one of the best live bands on the road today.

I had the great fortune to see Red Molly perform (Blue Door) a month before their album dropped, where they performed many of the songs on this new album. The only thing missing from the album is the live energy, but the harmonies are just as tight and beautiful in both. This is the first Molly album to include Molly Venter who replaced Carolann Solebello in the group, and she makes a great addition to the already great group. I actually never saw them with Solebello, but Venter adds a great energy and plays a mean rhythm guitar, in addition, of course, to her great voice. This album, I think, showcases all that Red Molly do so well. Their original tracks are great, including one by Molly, and two written by Abbie (though I would have liked to have had a few more from both). But they also have a great ability to take other good songs and make them their own. Three great examples from this album include the Tim O'Brien/Darrell Scott "Walk Beside Me," Dolly Parton "Do I ever Cross Your mind," and Mark Erelli's "Ghost." The Parton tune (besides reminding me of her great songwriting career) just keeps playing, and while this might be heresy to Red Molly, I almost like their version of "Ghost" better than the excellent version by Erelli. I downloaded this album the first morning it was available, and it has been in constant rotation in our household. Buy the album, but do yourself a favor and catch these great singers/writers/performers on the road. You won't be disappointed.
