Best songs: Naomi, Songs Against Sex, April 8th, A Baby For Pree. This album is great. Not as much of a stunning, shining masterpiece as "Aeroplane", but a masterpiece in its own right. Let it sink into you from above.

I don't know what it is, but something about this album is very inspiring to me. I know the entire album is fantastic, but "A Baby for Pree" almost made me cry. I know its basically the same melody as "Where You'll Find Me Now" , but the lyrics are so well done, as eerie and dark as they are. Buy this album. If you can tolerate the buzzing instruments and Jeff's exceptionally human voice, I guarantee it will move you.
  • another masterpiece.

I have the CD, and isn't the song called, "A Baby For Free", not "A Baby For Pree"?

So hauntingly brilliant. This grows on me more and more each day. Three peaches, April 8th, and baby for pree, are just as powerful as anything on "the Aeroplane." And song against sex is just as beautiful in its own way. Either way, Neutral Milk Hotel has got to be one of the best bands to EVER play. There songs take you to another world like no band has ever done before, it's incredable.
  • If anything deserves 5 stars it is this.

i mean, obviously no album on the face of the planet can ever even be mentioned in the same sentence as in the aeroplane over the sea. there are no words for it. that, however, doesn't make this album any less fantastic. i was a little wary after the first listening, as i think many other listeners were, but this is definitely among my favorite albums ever now. the sound, overall, is concentrated, confusing, and maybe a little overwhelming at times. the story of this album is also a lot harder to follow than that of aeroplane's. first listen, i didn't want to ever hear this album again. too much noise. listen to naomi, though, if anything. absolutely breathtaking. anyways, after a few listens, you'll be hooked. this album, i'm telling you. it's good.
  • Great, if you can get past the guitar

I think the main reason I would prefer Aeroplane over this is the restraint on the electric guitar that is not as present here. It's not the playing, it's the insane lo-fi fuzz sound that someone thought was a good idea. It's really hard to find a sound system or headphones that make that a good sound, but if you can get over it then you will find Jeff Mangum's fantastic world that I love to spend time in. His voice just hits me, it's so polarizing but I love it. Go ahead and take a swig of some neutral milk y'all.

Let's put it like this. Jeff Mangum and the rest of NMH know what they're doing and this album proves it. The songwriting is great and should hit you in the emotional spot or at least make you think. The fuzz on the album is enough to make my head explode at its genius. I don't know what else to say, do yourself a favor and purchase this masterpiece.
