It's ART ROCK. They only dress like crazy over the top monsters to mock some metal groups who do the same. They have many comedic lyrics in their songs and are not a band by any means intended to be taken seriously. also they've been performing before slipknot JUST SAYIN' (1981)

If you haven't noticed, the garbage band that's found in your name dresses up as well. GWAR may not be the best band around, but there's more originality and creativity to be found in their music than in any of the member's of Slipknot's little fingers. Besides, you've got to admire a band that's created an entire mythos about themselves that's interesting and rather humorous, as it was intended to be.
Ragnarok is a great addition to GWAR's lineup.

What was that!? Worst band ever! Stupid song names dumb lyrics. I tried to watch a video of them on on demand and the 20 seconds I got through, I couldn't stop laughing. This band simply takes up space.

You must be... because you haven't bought the whole album yet.. or perhaps you were just born. Either way, sooner or later Gwar will infect your soul and you will ooz out Gwaredness all over the place, then infecting others with Gwar.. AND THAT"S A GOOD THING because life without Gwar is a lonely place indeed. But really, this is Gwar at their prime. This album along with a few others is the essence of Gwar, so it gives a pretty good primer of what Gwar is like. BUY it NOW!

Any one who thinks Gwar is a freak show, or is digusting, or has distasteful lyrics is....well they're right :)
However, they are missing the point completely! Dig into Gwars lyrics and you'll find guys who are really thinking and have extremely valid points, they just dress it up with nifty things like comedy, blood, gore, and little blue bonnets! Not smart enough to figure that out? Get off the war wagon!

Excellent intro to GWAR and the like. Ragnarok and Dirty Filthy are really a good example of the genre. I would recommend to anyone to try it out!
