Tracy Marcellino has a knack for hooks which are both memorable and utterly unpredictable, something that has been missing for far too long from today's music. While her work with Twilight Sleep was already impressive, with Oh Boy Les Mecs Tracy evolves and matures her sound in a way that feels natural and organic. Unrest kicks things off with an engaging snare-driven beat and an anthemic chorus which hints at vintage Blondie and Berlin. Helium's moody atmosphere with its brooding bass line and Tracy's staccato phrasing seems like the perfect companion for a 3am drive on a desolate highway. Nature Nurture is the highlight ballad of this EP, the last song of a lost prom, the one where life just crystallizes together before your very eyes and finally everything makes sense. The Flood is this collection's darkest track, the vibe is nervous and twitchy and Tracy's voice hovers in her lower range sounding subdued and calculated. The EP closes with Dormant Frenzy, the floaty four-to-the-floor kick drum groove keeps this minimalistic vibe moving along before a fuller arrangement emerges about halfway through the song. Nurture Nature is an impeccably produced collection of songs and an exceptional debut from Oh Boy Les Mecs. The only downside is that it's not a full album and it will definitely leave you craving for more. Despite their slow trickling output, Oh Boy Les Mecs is truly a band to watch and one which I would highly recommend.
