I am quickly getting hooked on this band. I don't exactly know why I like them so much. They are so catchy for some reason. I just love their sound. It's their vocal tone and increasingly brilliant instrumentals. I first discovered them with Hey Lloyd in one of my favorite movies, P.S. I Love You. The music, including their song, was one of the biggest reasons that I love that movie so much. All of their music makes for great background music and I genuinely believe that most of their tunes would do just as well in movies. They remind me of She & Him, but Camera actually has much more talent than just vocal skill. This album, along with all their albums, have really understated, yet powerful lyrics. Such a subtle hint of sexiness as well. This is their best and most complete album to date. This is a really good band and a really good album. They are not great, but genuinely really good. All of the songs are either 3 or 4 stars. Not a single filler tune in the bunch as you find on their earlier efforts. Part of the reason is that the vocals are almost entirely the women singing. Their earlier albums feature more of the guys singing and, bluntly, they can't sing all that well. That's not what makes Camera Obscura unique. My favorite songs are New Years Resolution, Do It Again, Every Weekday, and Break It To You Gently.

As far as albums go, it is difficult to find one today that is put together as well as this; every song is worth listening to. I have purchased so many albums over the last 20 years and would put this in my top 5 in terms of wanting to hear the whole thing play through from beginning to end.

OK, let's face it. Desire Lines is no My Mauldin Career. Yep, a few great songs, including Do It Again and at least 2 others. But compared to the last album, it just doesn't compare. I'm glad that I bought it (pre-bought, actually, because I so enjoyed My Mauldin Career), but it doesn't stand up to it. I enjoy the higher energy songs, so this is a bit disappointing.
  • Just amazing

There is a cinematic, stirring quality that originally drew me in to Camera Obscura with Let's Get Out of This Country. I listened to that album over and over and over, so haunted by her gorgeous voice and lyrics that stick in the brain. This album has that same effect on me. Take the opportunity and download this album to listen to on a long car ride. It's beautiful, I actually cried ("I'll cry!)" to Cri du Cœur, favorite song of the album. Just amazing.

I spent about 30 seconds sampling a few songs then quickly clicked BUY. Tracey Ann's voice never lets me down and the songs are very soothing. This album, IMHO is noticably more melodic than previous efforts. I really enjoy their style. Great buy
  • Inconsistent

This is an inconsistent band. They have the ability to write some of the most beautiful pop gems, but then they do have some clunkers. This album is no exception. While songs 3-6 and 11-13 are good to superb, the rest of the songs are pretty mediocre. A lot of people give blanket 5 star reviews, but I think that should be reserved for albums for which every song is stellar or close to that.

Camera Obscura is a great band, always have been. I have loved their earlier stuff, like early Belle and Sebastian, primitive, raw, and sincere, and unlike anything else. Camera Obscura has done it again with another GREAT album, if you're ready, to break your heart with real beauty. Lovely voice, lovely lyrics, and a lovely band from a lovely country.
