The first 4 songs are the epitome of how to start an album. They’re sooo unique, sooo melodramatic, sooo emotionally complex that after 10 years I can’t stand listen them separately.

I remember that it took me awhile to warm up to this band. When the Shins finally clicked for me, it was listening to their album "Oh, Inverted World" haunt my car one autumn. The next spring I began listening to "Chutes Too Narrow" and that one soon became my internal (and external) soundtrack. I greatly anticipated their next release. When I picked up "Wincing The Night Away" in January 2007 it was like finding a piece of magic in the dark, snowy night. I'd say you should check them all out, but if you're drawn to begin here, you'll not be disappointed.

This is the best album I have ever heard and will probably stay that way. It can't be beat. Every song is perfect and catchy and amazing. This is the most outstanding album of all time.

Phantom Limb is the most beautiful song I've ever listened to, next to 40 Mark Strasse. Perfect album.

I stumbled onto the Shins about a year after this album came out - heard Phantom Limb on the radio and was immediately drawn to it. I listened to the album through a few times - usually with a repeat on PL and Australia - but soon found myself paying more attention to the latter tracks. After almost a decade this album stands up as one of the most complete works in the genre (at least as far as i'm familiar with it), with pop appeal, lyrics that perplex but in a way that makes you want to understand them, guitar and keyboard work that binds everything together and, above all, James' singular voice putting the ineffible stamp on what is, for me, one of the best albums in the first decade of the millenium.
  • The Shins at their best.

This album my friends is one wonderful work of art. Sea legs is my personal favorite song, but it's almost too difficult to choose. "Black waves", "spilt needles", and "A Comet Appears" are up there for me as well. There's a good mix of happy and dark/mysterious tones in this album.

Herbagursh, huge fan of Spilt Needles over here! I think that that was an awesome song and hope that everyone else likes it... I know none of the other songs in this album though... Anyways, Spilt Needles is a great song!
