  • Mature effort, but is something missing?

And I suppose the “issue” can be reduced to the very limited presence of Jon Davison’s vocals on this album. The dynamics of the music seems a bit less soaring as a result, and I’m left with the impression that without Davison these guys may be somewhat adrift. A shame if this plays out over time, too, as “If” stands out out as a real high water mark in the history of prog. My guess is that if you loved GH’s last three efforts you’ll enjoy this album too, as there's some very appealing music on this album – but this album isn’t the best place to start your journey into their music/poetry. If new to GH, take “If” and “Cor Cordium”out for a spin, then come back to Ode and see if you can catch the direction these guys are trying to take you. It’s a journey worth taking. These guys are good, often border on brilliance. They keep the spirit of Yes and ELP alive, and in my book that makes them priceless. Ode continues the journey, and will keep you thinking deep into the night.
