  • Remakes just aren't cutting it.

I heard the samples and that was enough to keep me from picking it up. Luckily, a friend of mine had it so I was able to listen to the whole thing. It's played well, produced decently if with a very light touch, and Don's vocals are good when the melody is within his current range. These are also the problems compared to the original versions. John Levin is a really good player but it seems like he was tamed down for these sessions. Don's voice… it's just a fact of life that time takes its toll. Like I said, when the melody line fits his range, he sounds fine but the original melodies are cemented into the memory and it's hard to let all that go. With regard to the production, those behind the sound should've taken a page from Def Leppard's recent remakes: it won't be exactly the same but at least TRY to make it match.
  • Listen to the samples; what a disappointment.

I didn't buy the album, I listened to the samples. I've been a Dokken fan since the early 80's. The songs on this album are the ones I've loved for years. However, I can't recommend this album. It fails to capture the energy and punch of the originals, some of which are epic still to this day. I'm not expecting miracles, but it sounds like Don was taking a nap during the whole album and the guitar work and sound just isn't up to snuff. If you're going to put out a rerecorded greatest hits album showcasing some of your best work, at least kick it in the hind end and do it right with energy and vigor. It seems Dokken has made a career of few and far between gems (Back for the Attack, Erase The Slate, the earlier albums) muddled by albums of lackluster performances and forgettable songs. I know a band has to grow and change, but there are only a few of Dokken's albums that I think capture the energy they started out with. Don's vocal inconsistency has long been a disappointment over the years. When you catch him on a good day and he sings his heart out, it's so awesome. Sometimes though, it just sounds like he's going through the motions and the feeling isn't there. That's the impression I get from these samples. HOWEVER - The last several songs and bonus tracks are good.

I'm a Dokken fan from the very beginning. This is just embarrassing. Don has no Vibrato in his voice anymore. It's terrible...

This was a big mistake! Don's voice is not as good as it used to be, which is understandable because he is older. I know that with today's technology you can get better recordings, but the old recordings had much more energy! George Lynch was one of my favorite guitar player, but his playing had more energy and aggressiveness!
  • Not as good as the original recordings

In the 80's Dokken was one of my favorite bands. These re-recorded tracks lack the sound, emotion and energy the original line up captured. Don's voice is good but again these re-recorded songs fall short of what he did in the original tracks. Last but not least George Lynch's guitar work is so much better. Jeff Pilson's voice is also a big void in these recordings. The best thing Don could do is to organize a reunion with all original members and tour. Not even record, just tour and give fans a chance to see them together again.
